CFP: Making Knowledge: Books, Prints, and Manuscripts in Japan
I am pleased to share the call for papers for the international symposium Making Knowledge: Books, Prints, and Manuscripts in Japan, to be held at UCLouvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, on July 1–2, 2027.
The symposium asks how knowledge was produced, curated, circulated, and perceived across manuscript, print, illustrated book, and painting in early modern and modern Japan. It closes with how these materials were later selected, collected, and recontextualized abroad. We welcome proposals from scholars working in art history, book history, literary studies, history, and related fields, at any career stage.
Proposals should be sent in Word format to freya.terryn@uclouvain.be by December 4, 2026. Each proposal should include a title, an abstract (max. 250 words), 3–4 keywords, the speaker’s name, a short CV (max. 100 words) with professional status and affiliation, and an e-mail address. Notification of acceptance will be made by December 23, 2026. The symposium will be held in person.
